An unexpected trove, Jim Marshall's portraits of the jazz greats are as wonderful as his legendary work with rock musicians (most recently enjoyed in "Jim Marshall: Proof"). The access his subjects allow him and their obvious ease around him give these photographs an unequalled intimacy. This portfolio of Marshall's favorite shots shows the classics of jazz onstage, backstage, in the studio and also in their kitchens and living rooms. Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Coleman Hawkins Marshall's images capture these faces and many, many more in authentic and unguarded moments. Jazz critic Phil Elwood provides an introduction, and captions throughout present Marshall's reminiscences in his own words, making this book a must-have for both jazz and photography aficionados. By turns illuminating and haunting, "Jim Marshall: Jazz" confirms his place as one of the great portrait photographers.

The Beatles racing across Candlestick Park at the end of their final public performance; Johnny Cash pausing to give the camera a middle finger salute before playing for inmates in San Quentin; a weary Janis Joplin backstage, keeping a whiskey bottle company. Jim Marshall captured each of these iconic images with his camera. But what of the other shots taken during these legendary moments? For the first time, Marshall shares his contact sheets from the sittings, concerts, and sessions that surround his most famous pictures. Over sixty proof sheets are featured in their entirety, along with the final chosen hero shot on the facing page. This book sheds new light on Marshall's talents for revealing on film the essence of his subjects, from celebrated musicians, actors, writers, and performers, to everyday people from San Francisco to rural Appalachia. A rare glimpse into a great photographer's creative process, "Proof" provides a behind-the-scenes look at the making of some of the most preeminent images of our time.

It was the Summer of Love—two years before the hysteria of Woodstock—and those three days at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in June 1967 captured the sound of a new generation. But at the Monterey Pop Festival, they were just staking their claim on the future of rock. "Montery Pop" features over 100 photographs of the event, taken by legendary photojournalist Jim Marshall and accompanied by an in-depth text by Joel Selvin that includes firsthand recollections from such participants as David Crosby, Jerry Garcia, Country Joe McDonald, Al Kooper and many others.

Sharing the fascinating legacy of Jim Marshall with the world, we have traveled to Italy to present an exhibit of his work in Bologna, May 9–June 20, at the Ono Arte Contemporanea. Entitled "Johnny Cash: We Are All Men in Black," the exibit features iconic onstage, candid and intimate images Jim captured of the country music giant who became his close friend, published in Jim's book "Pocket Cash." Fifteen limited-edition prints are also available for sale during the showing.
Portsmouth Guildhall, built in 1890, has played host to such music greats as Duke Ellington, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and David Bowie. This magnificent neoclassical building has recently been relaunched as an all-purpose arts and entertainment venue, with giant exhibition spaces, each space being a piece of art in its own right. A copper-lined space with Zodiac engravings currently has an exhibition of album cover artwork by the late great Storm Thorgerson. In July an exhibition of Jim Marshall's photographs of the Rolling Stones from their 1972 U.S.tour of the West Coast--and published in "The Rolling Stones 1972"--is being presented in a new space being especially renovated and designed for photographic displays. This exhibition was previously on display at London's O2, at the same time the Stones' performance there in 2012. The exihibit coincides with the Stones' return to the UK music scene with sellout shows in London's Hyde Park, where they last played in 1969.
The San Francisco Art Exchange (SFAE) hosts "Album Covers, June 8 to July 8," celebrating the genre with the work of three of the greatest music photographers: Jim Marshall, Joel Brodsky and Barry Feinstein. Check out SFAE'swebsite for more information.
GuitarTown—a public arts project on LA's Sunset Boulevard featuring more than 25 Gibson Les Paul-mode guitar sculpture—includes a ginormous fiberglass guitar celebrating Jim Marshall, in recognition of his artistry and contribution to music history.
Occupying its home for a year outside the Andaz Hotel (which was the original Hyatt House) on Sunset Strip, the "Jack & Jim Guitar" is 10 feet high, and its creation is the result of a (second) partnership of Jack Daniel's and Jim Marshall Photography LLC. This one-of-a-kind sculpture displays Jim's iconic "Exile on Main Street" recording photographs, taken in 1972 at Sunset Sound Studio (you'll find many of these photographs in "The Rolling Stones 1972"), as well as the bold graphics of the Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 brand. The guitar will be auctioned off after its one-year exhibition.
The first solo museum exhibition of Jim's work opened at Experience Music Project (EMP) in Seattle on July 14. Coinciding with the release of "The Rolling Stones 1972" by Jim Marshall (Chronicle Books 2012) and the 50th anniversary of the band, the exhibit features 45 Rolling Stones photographs and marries an array of rare photographs produced during Jim’s lifetime, along with prints used for magazine art and proofs. It also includes estate-produced prints from the book that inspired this exhibit. Documenting moments from the recording studio to the stage, Marshall’s powerful photographs capture the camaraderie, essence and energy that make the Rolling Stones an internationally beloved band. The show runs for six months. Check out the museum's website for more details.
Austin City Limits Live, Austin’s new world-class live music venue, in partnership with Jack Daniel’s and Jim Marshall Photography LLC, is host to the largest exhibit of works from Jim's estate. TAKE A TOUR!

The exhibits coincide with the Stones' 50th anniversary and their much-anticipated return to the stage with two concerts at The O2 in November.
The San Francisco Art Exchange (SFAE) is host to an exciting exhibit of Jim Marshall's Rolling Stones images, focusing on shots taken while Jim was on assignment for LIFE in 1972. Demonstrating his trademark "All Access" style, Jim captured the group both in the studio, while they put the finishing touches on their landmark double album "Exile on Main Street," and onstage, with incredible performance shots during the West Coast leg of their blockbuster U.S. Tour that summer.
This event coincides with the publishing of a new book of Jim Marshall's photographs The Rolling Stones 1972 (Chronicle Books) and the group's 50th anniversary. Included are several iconic shots well known to Stones fans, alongside 12 new pieces that have never before been released. Collectors have the rare opportunity to acquire some of the very last remaining signed pieces, as well as the first print of each of the new editions.

"A Hero of the True West, Photographs of Johnny Cash by Jim Marshall" is an exhibition making its first appearance in Scotland, at Summerhall from October 6 through November 24, and includes a selection of never-before-seen images of Johnny Cash from the final book developed with Jim Marshall, Pocket Cash.
Jim Marshall met Johnny Cash in 1963 in New York and quickly became not only the Man in Black’s favorite photographer (allowed unprecedented access to Cash and his family both at work and at play) but also a close family friend. For nearly 10 years Marshall joined Cash on the road and photo-documented the musician’s famous prison concerts at Folsom and San Quentin, meetings with other famous country and western heroes and the day-to-day family life, which mostly consisted of long periods of touring on a bus around America’s heartlands.
This exhibition of 30 portraits by Jim are mixed with social documentation of a time in Johnny Cash's life when Cash struggled with the demons of despair and drugs and eventually refound his faith, receiving critical and popular acclaim for the nationally networked "Johnny Cash Show" and ultimately successful treatment for his addictions.
For more information, check out Summerhall's website.
A selection of never-before-seen photographs of Johnny Cash from the final book developed with Jim Marshall, Pocket Cash (Chronicle Books, Fall 2010), were featured through gallery exhibitions in San Francisco, New York and London. The shows also marked the one-year anniversary of Marshall’s passing on March 24, 2010.
In response to the success of Pocket Cash, Jim Marshall’s final book developed before his death and to the interest expressed by so many of Johnny’s and Jim’s fans in owning prints of these images, the estate of Jim Marshall authorized limited-editions prints of 15 of the images in the book, all from Jim's negatives. These images had not previously been available as silver or color prints.
Only 5 of the 110 images of Cash and his family and friends included in Pocket Cash had ever been exhibited as prints. Each exhibition presented 12 to 19 prints in varying sizes, many of which are still available for purchase. These include prints of 4 iconic images published during Jim’s lifetime. For the first time, the exhibitions presented for sale 15 limited-edition prints, which are authorized by Jim’s estate and bear its stamp. All prints are made from Jim’s original negatives; each edition is limited to 25 prints.
